England: February 2009, 42-year-old Ian Boynton pulled out 13 of his own teeth with a pair of pliers because he could not find a dentist to take him on as a NHS (National Health Service) patient according to a story in the Daily Mail. “I’ve tried to get in at 30 dentists over the last eight years but have never been able to find one to take on NHS patients.” he said.[1]

Oregon: In Oregon’s recently reshuffled health care prioritization list, abortion finds itself 41st on a list of surgeries and conditions. Priorities on the list range from 1 (the highest) to 680. According to Linda Gorman in an article by Steven Ertelt by lifenews.com February 19, 2009:

Abortion is listed ahead of treating an ectopic pregnancy (43), sexually transmitted diseases (56), or an infection or hemorrhage resulting from a miscarriage (68).

Abortion also ranks ahead on the priority list before surgery to repair injured internal organs (88), a closed hip fracture (89), or a hernia showing symptoms of obstruction or strangulation (176).

U.S.A.: A part of the President’s “Stimulus Package” recently pushed through Congress included one key element of a future nationwide health care system. This system would follow England’s lead in rationing health care as Oregon has done. This new key element would have a national committee that would provide a set of guidelines to “help” doctors make “cost efficient” decisions in prescribing care for their patients.

The stimulus bill calls this new national group the ‘Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research’. According to Betsy McCaughey, former lieutenant governor of NY, it follows the strategy laid out in a book written by Senator Tom Daschle. She explains that the goal is “to slow the development and use of new medications and technologies because they are driving up costs. He praises Europeans for being more willing to accept ‘hopeless diagnoses’ and ‘forgo experimental treatments,’ and he chastises Americans for expecting too much from the health-care system.” [3]
